Hiya Sonu, that emulator is so you can run PS1 games on the PC. As far as I know there isn't a PS2 emulator but I guess one will be available in the future.

I'm thinking of buying a PS2 later in the year, probably a second hand one, there's loads for sale in the local free ads.

A lot, they are completley different systems, the CPU and the architecture is different for instance. Games for the PS2 would need a complete code re-write for it to work on a PC.
For example, the playstation2 CPU runs at 300MHZ but it outperforms a 1.2Ghz Athlon system with a Geforce2 card. This is because the system is designed to play games from the ground up, a PC isn't - it still has a slow 66Mhz bus connecting the CPU and video card for example. The PS2 has a pathetic ammount of memory however so it can't display detailed textures, that's why the graphics in PS2Drakan look so 'flat' and smooth.

I guess PS2Drakan would work perfectly fine on a PC though if Surreal converted it, after all Drakan2 was originally going to be a PC game.

Yabasic is not a PS2 emulator that allows PS2 games to be played on a PC. Yabasic is a programming language for people who want to develop small, simple games and other apps on their PS2's. The emulator allows people to develop the software on a PC instead rather than to play games.
Actually Sony will be / has released a version of linux for the PS2 so with a standard USB mouse and keyboard, you can see that the PS2 is more like a PC than a games console.

I bet it won't be long though before a proper emulator is released; that is one that allows Drakan: TAG to be played on a PC.

Well, it looks like I was wrong, Sonu let me know about this http://debeuzer.free.fr/pcs2/indexgb.htm site he found which appears to have a proper emulator for download.

I have yet to try it as I'm still a bit skeptical about it working properly but if anyone owns Drakan:TAG it would be really nice to find out if we really can play it on our PCs...

Update: Well, I can tell you it definitley works, Lowlight tested it but there is a snag. Currently, only 3 games work on it and Drakan2 is NOT one of them. However, this emulator is in development so hopefully within time, it might just allow Drakan2 to be played on a PC.

Hmm. Sorry if this may not be this topic - but I dunno what topic this would fit since this is quite out-dated now.

The release of D2 reminded me the thoughts I had when I realized that D2 will not come out for PC - but I now really understand that it was the good choice to do. Drakan was released to PC - and it got NO (or very limited) fanship... only the news said a 'cool game coming out', but not many people played with it. It should have became a very famous game - but it did not since players with PC usually (and mostly) play with 1st person shooters. This is the reason why this (+strategy) genre are the only kinds of games which can be really profitable for PC... I am now waiting for Savage Skies, but I think that it will surely fail (the games I favourize are rarely big shots... :) ). This genre is simply NOT for PC! I think SONY made the perfect choice for releasing D2:TAQ for PS2, since more PS2 users play this kind of games (RPG, adventure, fantasy) then PC users. I now begin to think that Surreal should have released Drakan1 for PS also - the effort they made producing this game would have worthed more.

Anyone agrees/disagrees?

I'd have to disagree with you there, Drakan is a game that is equally suited to a PC as well as a console if not better suited to a PC. Surreal had to make major gameplay changes to make it suitable for a console audience.

The only reason Surreal made Drakan2 for the PS2 and not the PC is simply because Sony bought Psygnosis, the publisher of Drakan and hence the rights to the game. If Sony hadn't bought Psygnosis or Drakan1 was originally published by some other publisher, Drakan2 would have been a PC game.

I did not say that PCs' abilities would not fit Drakan's or Drakan2's requirements!

I just say that the PEOPLE who own PCs are usually NOT interested in adventure/fantasy/RPG games! Only in the hack&slash Diablo kinds! Just take a look at the gamelist for PS and for PS2, than take a look at PC games' list - you will surely find the difference in the genres.

I agree with you ASSASIN, and not because I have a PS2, but because it's difficult to make games, THAT good using PC software compatible for PC gameplay.

PS

Is Savage Skies the one previously known as Ozzy's black skies? If so, I am also anxiously awaiting it's release.....

IMHO PC's are much better for gaming. Online gaming is easier to do on PC than consoles, there's more buttons, more functions, bugs are fixed easily, just a simple download.

Yes, they changed the name because Ozzy backed out of the deal with the developers or something.
Assassin - I would agree with you that savage skies is more suited to a console. From what I can gather its a arcade action game rather than a complex action / adventure like Drakan.
I still think Drakan2 would be better on a PC though.
