NVIDIA alt-tab issue & Fast Sync

Post by UCyborg »

I totally missed this, but few months ago, NVIDIA came up with new Fast Sync feature for Fermi, Maxwell and Pascal cards. It's basically like VSYNC, preventing screen-tearing, but without limiting frame-rate to refresh-rate and input lag, or at least input lag is very minor compared to running without any kind of sync at all, even better than the old trick when you turn on VSYNC and limit frame rate to "refresh rate - 1 or 2 frames" to improve mouse responsiveness.

It seems turning on Fast Sync for the game also resolves issue of game freezing when alt-tabbing or exiting, if you run it without dgVoodoo, which can otherwise be resolved by hitting CTRL + ALT + DEL and ESC. You can enable Fast Sync in game profile using the latest NVIDIA Profile Inspector, the option is under Vertical Sync. Also, frame-rate should be limited to 60 or 75 FPS to prevent bugs that occur at higher frame-rates.

It depends on how much do you mind the fact that the game physics is affected by frame-rate. It's easier to jump longer with 60 FPS compared to higher frame-rates IMO. Somewhere above 150 visual glitches start to show, the missing flame on the flaming swords or the effect that Mourn Bringer sword has.

It's not perfect neither, there is some visible stuttering on my card. And for some reason, the whole world just turns black at times. Oh well. Looks like Fast Sync is better when running at higher frame-rates.
