Game freezes after assigning keybinds

Hey there,

I've been struggling to install Drakan but I've managed to make lots of progress.
The game runs smoothly after I've followed these steps (found on this forum):

"""""""""""""""""""
Anyway, since you can't seem to install it using installer anyway, you'll have to manually extract the game from CD. To do that, you'll need to download UniExtract from here. There are two verisons, the one with installer and the portable one, I went with the installer option. When you have that installed, open Drakan CD with Explorer and then open the folder Setup. Inside, you should see file named data1.cab (or just data1, depends on your settings). Right click on the file and select UniExtract Files... In the window that opens, change the destination directory to wherever you want the game to be installed eg. C:\Games\Drakan but avoid installing to any Program Files directory, otherwise you'll have to set the game to run as admin for the savegames to work properly. Click OK and voila, you have the base game installed.

But you're not done yet, you still need to install some patches for the game to work better. First, get official 445 patch from here and unzip the file to some temporary folder. In that folder, you'll see file data1.cab, which you have to extract the same way as you did with the data1.cab on Drakan CD. Finally, download AiO patch from here and extract files Drakan.exe and Dragon.rfl to your game folder.
"""""""""""""""""""""

One problem remains. Whenever I try to assign a key (all commands are currently not assigned), for example: attack -> mouse button 1.
the game instantly freezes without me being able to do anything.

Is there a way to fix this or assign the keybinds in another way?

Cheers!
D.

Oh yeah, and when I press on "controls" under the Options menu in game, the game
instantly crashes.

Hi I have not heard of that issue before. What operating system are you using?

Drakan seems to have numerous problems with Windows 8.1 and especially so on laptops with integrated graphics if yours is one of them. The only thing I can suggest is try program compatibility mode for Windows 95/98 and disable 3d sound effects and EAX. I have not tried it on Windows 8.1 but from what I can gather on this forum it is very hit and miss if it works or not.

Some others who have Drakan and Windows 8.1 might be able to help

Meh, the problem keeps persisting.
I guess I'm better off buying a "new" PC. What kind of
opperating system should I look for to run the game; 95, 98, XP?

Thanks for the responses by the way :)
I'm delighted that people still care about Drakan.

PS: I bought Drakan: the ancient gates for my old PS2.
I've never played the game, and although people say its not so great I feel thrilled!

Drakan the Ancient Gates is worth playing - its quite different to the PC original but once you get used to how it looks its okay. At least the ending is better than the first game.

As for a 'new' PC to play Drakan on - if you can get hold of an old Win98 PC with a AGP Nvidia or ATI graphics then that would be great. I wouldn't want to spend any money on one though. The game works OK on XP albeit without the 3D sound effects so if you have access to an old XP machine that would be better.

I'd wait a bit though someone else who had Win8 may have some suggestions.
