The Order Reborn - Book

Postby Master-Moe » Fri Apr 15, 2016 6:31 am

Hey guys!

Returning player and forumer here. Drakan is an amazing game that has impacted our lives. And let's face it, once we have experience the world of Drakan, we can never forget about it.

The Order Reborn is an amazing story. But I don't think it should remain a forgotten tale. My question is two-fold:
Is there a book of The Order Reborn out there that I can buy somewhere? eBooks are great, but I'm into physical books myself.
And if there is not, are there plans of releasing a book? Or would there be copyright issues with that?

For those who this is concerned, self-publishing a book has never been easier or cheaper. I have personally published with CreateSpace (an association with Amazon) and they're swift, easy, and fee-free. Instead of paying a ton of fees for printing books, you 'pay per print'. Meaning, they take a cut from the sale for printing and such, and you get royalties. But it's completely free for you to publish.

If you guys have any plans of doing this, I'd be down for helping with whatever assistance I can. Anything from the right formatting to help with a cover.

Hi, I was one of the main writers for that story. As you say due to copyright reasons the story cannot be sold or made into a physical copy that is distributed (paid for or not) and therefore can only be 'fan fiction' and disclaimers as such put into the wording.

Many Drakan fans have enjoyed that and I'm glad that it is appreciated by the game fans. Even if I could sell it It isn't good quality enough for any publisher to pick up - it would need some major re-writing and editing. I could self publish but even then it would need to be edited and would still break copyright laws. The only way around that is to remove and / or change any reference to Drakan including characters etc.

The other snag is say in just this instance that the work is not copyrighted, it is the work of many people and I'd have to get permission from each of them to publish it.

Glad you like it. The offline version can be printed however and kept for reading at your own leisure.

It is also on several fan fiction sites so it remains out there on the internet in some form or another.

I suppose the biggest question would be, who owns the copyrights to Drakan? I know it hasn't been 75 years (or however long it takes for copyright-ownership to dissipate), but if the companies that have the rights no longer exist, to whom does it fall upon?

Alternatively, I'm wondering if it would be possible to publish non-profit versions of the book. It's probably a slim chance by a long-shot, but worth thinking about, I'd say! :)

Copyright to Drakan and all of it's assets and trademarks belong to Sony so we would have to get permission to publish it which won't be worth the effort to be honest. As for non profit publishing it can be posted to fan fiction sites such as fanfiction.net which I have already done to a few of them.

To distribute it in a physical form would cost money so the easiest way to get it out there is by electronic means. I could look into amazon so it would be published as an ebook but like above it would need some major editing and permission from all who contributed to it.

A good example is http://tamrielvault.com/group/the-backs ... -retelling story based on a playthrough of Skyrim it's a fantastic read and well written but sadly cannot be published other than fan fiction due to copyright reasons. It's about argonians so if you like dragons it's a good read. It's being written by one of my friends on the Tamriel Vault.
